Did you know the average UK wedding pumps out about 14.5 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent?
That’s more than double the annual footprint of one person in Britain and almost the same as running the average household for a year. When you multiply that by hundreds of thousands of ceremonies each year, the numbers (and the impact) get frighteningly big, fast.
Those stats are exactly why I’ve been shaking up how I work. Every choice, no matter how small, adds up to a lighter, kinder footprint. Here’s what that looks like in practice, from the daily habits to the bigger sized goals. Because weddings should celebrate love, not emissions. I’m well aware this is a journey, not a destination progress over perfection. I hope this blog gives a little nudge to couples and fellow creatives toward greener choices of their own.
Less Waste, More Care
Over the past year, I've drastically cut down on the materials I use. I no longer hand out leaflets at exhibitions or events, they usually end up in the bin anyway, and let's be honest, no one really needs more paper clutter. Instead, I focus on meaningful conversations and follow‑ups.
The few printed items I do use, like my wedding magazines, are from sustainable companies. I still believe in the power of something tactile and beautifully made, but not at the planet’s expense. My albums and fine‑art prints are produced by a supplier that shares my values. They are carbon neutral, environmentally responsible, and fully transparent about their practices.
All my financial systems are paperless too. Invoices, contracts, and receipts are handled digitally, cutting down unnecessary printing and keeping things tidy and accessible.
A Greener Studio
I've been working hard on my studio over the past few months and have decided to start making conscious choices when it comes to my consumption rates. My studio runs on 100 % renewable energy, and I use LED lighting to keep electricity use low without compromising on quality.
Every bit of kit I invest in is chosen with care. I stick with reputable suppliers committed to sustainability and ethics. It might take a bit more research, but it feels right. I want to know that what I’m using to tell your story isn’t costing the earth.
Virtual Meetings > Travel
I cut unnecessary travel by offering virtual meetings via Teams or Zoom whenever I can. It makes things easier for everyone, especially if you’re juggling work, kids, or accessibility needs.
When I do hit the road for a shoot or meeting, I drive in eco mode. It’s a small thing, but small things add up. I’ll often buddy up with second shooters, combine errands into one round trip, or hop on the train if the timetable plays nice. That means more time for a podcast and a decent flat white. Swapping motorway miles for screen time also means I can tweak mood boards or finish off edits as I'm going.
Tree Planting, Just Because
I’ve started planting trees in my own backyard. It’s not through a fancy offsetting scheme, just me, a spade, and the hope that something green and good will grow. It keeps me grounded (literally) and reminds me why I care so much about this.
Looking ahead, I’ve set a 2027 goal: joining Carbon Neutral Britain’s Small Business Programme and funding at least 30 new trees every month through their verified reforestation projects. The scheme also invests in renewable energy developments, and once enrolled I’ll be a certified Carbon Neutral business.
Everyday Sustainability
When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll usually find me in the garden. I compost, grow fruit and veg, and generally try to make my little patch of earth a bit better. If you follow me on social, you’ve probably seen a wonky tomato or two in my stories, proof that sustainability doesn’t stop at the studio door.
What This Means for You
Choosing suppliers who actively measure and cut their emissions, like I do, means your day can land well below that 14.5‑tonne average. Each paperless contract, virtual planning call, and carbon neutral album is a few more kilos of CO₂ you never have to worry about.
